An energy efficiency partnership forged in summer 2015 allows homeowners in Routt and Moffat counties to sign up for a home energy assessment for free. The free option is available to all homeowners who have Yampa Valley Electric Association for electricity and also have Atmos Energy for the primary source of home heating.

The service is available to customers who sign up through Energy Smart Colorado at www.EnergySmartColorado.com, which works in partnership with the local nonprofit Yampa Valley Sustainability Council. The assessment would otherwise cost $300, and Atmos gas heat homeowners also receive a free “quick-fix” kit valued at $50 for gas saving measures such as a hot water heater blanket or digital thermostat. Homeowners with only YVEA service and no natural gas service can request the assessment and pay half price or $150.

“With the cold weather approaching, this is the time to find out how to make your home more energy efficient,” said Sarah Jones, YVSC executive director. “A free audit after rebates allows more money to go toward energy efficiency upgrades for lower utility bills and a more comfortable home this winter.”

The residential assessment includes an extensive walk-through, a blower-door test and infrared imaging to show areas of air leakage. A comprehensive report is sent to the customer afterward with a list of recommendations. Homeowners will have accurate information and images to show how to proceed with home energy efficiency improvements in a prioritized and cost effective manner.

The free offering is applicable to homes 3,000 square feet or less. Homes larger than 3,000 square feet have an additional charge of 5 cents per square foot. Home assessments in outlying areas may incur a modest travel fee.
