Buying  Sustainably at your grocery store

Talking Green Pete Marczyk, Marczyk Fine Foods, Denver Post, Denver, CO

Date: Tuesday, February 21

Time: 6:00 p.m. Networking and 6:30p.m. Presentation

Location: The Bear River Bar and Grill, across from the Gondola

This month, YVSC’s Talking Green program presents:  “Buying Sustainably at your grocery store” featuring Pete Marczyk with Marczyk Fine Foods

From Denver Post, Denver, CO:

People ask all the time after presentations:  How do I make a difference? We always answer: vote with your wallet! Don’t be seduced by that cheap chicken or .99 cent pork. American farmers, after being encouraged to plant “from fencepost to fencepost” (and subsidized for doing so) have found that it is still hard to make a buck. And the farmers who are breeding and raising animals are equally challenged. The best way to change the system is to buy from the producers who are trying to do the same thing.

Topic covered:
Read the label!
What are CAFO’s?
“Your meat is all natural, just like the big grocers. Why is it more expensive?”
The biggest challenges to shopping sustainably.

• A list of learning objectives of the presentation
Why to buy sustainably?
How to buy sustainably.
Why it matters to your family’s health.

All natural meat. Free range. Grass fed. Organic. Shopping nowadays seems to require a degree in farming! How do you know when the truth is on the label, and when it’s just a bit of a stretch? Pete Marczyk, “Denver’s most eloquent grocer” has spent the last 10 years finding real food for his many customers. Marczyk Fine Foods is an urban fresh market, and has just opened a second store in Denver. Pete is passionate about the food he finds, come find out why.

Light snacks will be provided at the talk, and a cash bar will be available. A $10 suggested donation can be made at the door. For more information, contact Kim at YVSC at 846-9015 or kim@yvsc.org.

Peter Marczyk

Born October 21, 1966

Founder and President, Marczyk Fine Foods, Inc.

Pete Marczyk was born and raised in Massachusetts. He moved to Denver in 1990, following a favorite prep school teacher out to Colorado. He supported himself with house painting, plastering, and wall paper hanging.

Later that year, he applied and was hired on at Merrill Lynch in Denver as a Financial Consultant.  He worked at the downtown location, and in 1995 was transferred to the Boulder office to head a burgeoning debt management department.  In 1998 he decided to focus on the mortgage business and was employed by Keycorp Mortgage in Denver.

However, his passion was for a stock of a different sort, and while working for Keycorp, he began to create the outline for Marczyk Fine Foods. His vision was for a scalable version of a small market, a World Class Neighborhood Market that would source the best ingredients from all over Colorado, the USA and Europe.

In April 2002 Marczyk Fine Foods opened its doors, and Pete quickly became “Denver’s most eloquent grocer.” He is the resident expert on everything from American meat production to mushroom foraging. When the mad cow outbreak became news in December of 2003, local TV stations knew they would find a knowledgeable source of information if they came to Marczyk’s. The same went for the Chinese seafood scare of August 2007.

Pete has always been passionate about cooking with the best ingredients; he advocates and teaches simple preparation.  He is an inveterate experimenter with a hell-of-a palate who creates many of Marczyk’s recipes.
Marczyk Fine Foods, located at the corner of 17th and Clarkson, is a shopping oasis
in a world of factory food and big box retail. Their specialties are Niman Ranch meats, cheeses from near and far, fresh local produce, and thoughtfully selected pantry items from around the world.

Talking Green is a monthly networking event (on the fourth Tuesday of the month) that brings together local individuals, organizations and business who are interested in sustainability to learn about various environmental topics.  In its early stages, Taking Green focused on Green Building, but recently topics have broadened to include Zero Waste, Colorado Carbon Fund, Recycling, Geothermal heating, Xeriscaping, Solar Power, Energy Star, and Community Supported Agriculture. Since 2007, as a program of Yampa Valley Sustainability Council, Talking Green has expanded to include a more diverse audience of attendees, and this group now has an active committee that meets monthly.
