On Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, starting at noon while supplies last, YVSC will be at City Market handing out free reusable shopping bags, “Remember Your Bag” hangers, and information about the negative impacts of plastic bags in our community.

Every year in the U.S., consumers use about 100 billion plastic bags. To produce these plastic bags, 14 million trees are destroyed, 3.9 billion gallons of fresh water is used, and 2.7 million tons of carbon dioxide is produced. Reusable shopping bags are an easy, affordable, environmentally-friendly option. The average reusable bag has a lifespan equal to that of more than 700 disposable plastic bags. Just one person using reusable bags over their lifetime would remove more than 22,000 plastic bags from the environment. “Using your own reusable bags when you shop is an easy step all of us can take to avoid plastics and reduce our impact on the environment,” said Cameron Hawkins, YVSC’s Waste Diversion Director.

Reusable shopping bags can be purchased for a nominal fee near the check-out stands at all local grocery stores.
